The Sun announces paywall plans

News International has announced the details behind its forthcoming paywall, which will launch to coincide with its recently acquired Premier League highlight rights.

Online seven-day Sun content will go behind a paywall from 1 August, a model which reflects that of its sister title’s Times+ package.

For £2 per week, as part of the soon to be launched “Sun+” package, readers can view content across web, phone and tablet devices as well as have access to Premier League clips and exclusive offers and promotions.

It is understood the Sun print newspaper will include Premiership highlights access codes for online viewing.

Mike Darcey, CEO of News International, says: “This move ensures we will be offering a compelling paid-for package across all our titles, delivering great value for news that is worth paying for. With the addition of the Premier League clips, we will be able to build on The Times’ credentials as Sports Newspaper of the Year, The Sun’s reputation as the paper for football and The Sunday Times’ renowned in-depth analysis and comment.”

News International inked its £20m deal to broadcast near-live online clips of 390 Premier League matches per season across The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times digital platforms. The three year deal goes live this August, the day The Sun paywall is erected.

The confirmation of The Sun’s paywall plans follows The Telegraph’s move to introduce a metered paywall model in March. The Telegraph offers digital packages between £1.99 and £9.99 per month.
