The Times boosts digital subscribers

The number of people paying for a digital subscription to The Times in the past four months has increased 7% to 119,255 in January, according to the latest figures released by News International.

News International, which last announced digital subscriber numbers in September, said digital subscribers to its sister title The Sunday Times had increased to 113,818 in January from 105,594 in September.

The publisher said an average of 59,882 copies of The Times were downloaded daily on the iPad during January, a rise of 35% since September. The Sunday Times iPad app proved to be slightly more popular with an average of 63,959 downloads in January, up 80% since September.

Although its digital subscriber rate is continuing to grow, The Times saw its print circulation drop to 405,113 in January, from 429,554 four months earlier. The Sunday Times dropped slightly to 967,975 from 984,223 during the same period.

The Times and Sunday Times newspapers were one of the first mainstream newspapers to start charging for access to their content in June 2010.

The figures come as News International faces further scrutiny after a number of journalists at The Sun were arrested over the weekend for their involvement in corruption, aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office and conspiracy.
