The United States of America, for instance is relatively young – less than 250 years old at the last count – and, judging by the recent experience of staff at, British Waterways’ leisure website, its citizens certainly tend towards the coprophilic. The day a news item about dog waste bins being installed by canal-sides went up on the site, 9,000 hits came in from the US, all linking to the story.

Apparently, the word “poop” exerts a mesmerising attraction on Americans, who find it hilarious. Thing is, the Diary can’t understand this infantile attitude: surely “tits” is much funnier.
