Perhaps Freud was right after all. The Wiener shrink maintained that one of the early stages in a child’s development is characterised by a fixation with all things anal. The same, it seems, holds true for nations.

The United States of America, for instance is relatively young – less than 250 years old at the last count – and, judging by the recent experience of staff at Waterscape.com, British Waterways’ leisure website, its citizens certainly tend towards the coprophilic. The day a news item about dog waste bins being installed by canal-sides went up on the site, 9,000 hits came in from the US, all linking to the story.

Apparently, the word “poop” exerts a mesmerising attraction on Americans, who find it hilarious. Thing is, the Diary can’t understand this infantile attitude: surely “tits” is much funnier.
