Thriving on the `cut and and thrust’

With reference to your report by Torin Douglas “Listen and learn” (MW March 10), perhaps I should have been more explicit in my welcome address at ITV’s Gala dinner.

When I said I had found it refreshing to attend a conference where, for the first time in nearly a decade, our agenda had not been dominated by media politics I was, of course, referring to freedom from the Westminster view of media.

In no way do I shrink from the politics that embrace the cut and thrust between media owner, advertiser and agency. After all, it was an early recognition of ITV’s responsibility to the viewer and the advertiser which brought about the creation of the Network Centre.
