In April Twitter announced the first stage of its commercial model, promoted tweets, which enables brands to feature more prominently in relevant search results and in people’s news feeds (nma.co.uk, 13 April 2010).
The next phase is to be promoted trending topics, which adds an 11th trending topic which is marked as ’promoted’ to differentiate it from the real trending topics.
The promoted trending topic will work in the same way as normal trending terms as users can click through to a search page which shows the conversations people are having about the term.
Disney is using it to promote Toy Story 3, which has been appearing for some as an 11th trending topic.
