Twitter to launch official iPhone app

Twitter has acquired Twitter iPhone app Tweetie with the intention of renaming it and launching it as a free official Twitter app.

Twitter has decided to launch an iPhone app itself after saying Twitter-based apps already on the iPhone were not good enough.

Evan Williams, CEO of Twitter, said on the company blog, “Careful analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes App Store revealed massive room for improvement. People are looking for an app from Twitter and they’re not finding one. So, they get confused and give up. It’s important that we optimise for user benefit and create an awesome experience.”

Twitter has agreed a deal with Tweetie owner Atebits to acquire the app for an undisclosed sum and the app’s founder, Loren Brichter, will become a member of the Twitter mobile team. Brichter will also help Twitter launch its service for the iPad later this year.

Tweetie is currently £1.79 in the App Store, but Twitter will relaunch the app under the name Twitter for iPhone in the coming weeks.
