Universal appoints head of film, TV and advertising

Universal Music UK has promoted Marc Robinson to head its film, TV and advertising department following the departure of Tracie London-Powell.

The division liaises with film and television companies and advertising agencies to place its music in programming, soundtracks and adverts. Robinson joined as head of film in 2003 from Chrysalis Music.

Executive vice-president of Universal Music UK Clive Fisher says Robinson must do more than maximising fees and revitalising catalogue sales; stressing that creative “synchronisation” deals play a significant role in developing artists.

Robinson’s promotion is one of a number of changes within the department. Greg Turner has been made creative licensing manager of film and computer games, while Neil Mulford joined earlier this year as creative licensing manager for advertising.

In his expanded role Robinson will also continue as music supervisor for Universal Music UK’s TV production division Globe Productions, working with Universal Music Operations president David Joseph and Globe general manager Iain Funnell.

Universal Music UK is a division of Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music company. Record labels within the group include Polydor, Decca Music Group and Verve Music Group. Acts include The Ordinary Boys, The Killers and Keane.

In February this year, Sony BMG named Duncan Bird, former managing director of Soul Advertising, as its vice-president of brand partnerships. The company is looking to grow its revenue beyond traditional record sales by encouraging brands to tie up with its artists and music.
