Range Rover has unveiled its new ’compact’ Range Rover and revealed the interior is to be designed by Victoria Beckham, in a bid to attract younger, fashion-conscious buyers.

The car, called the Range Rover Evoque, is expected to go on sale in about a year’s time, and will be the smallest, lightest and greenest Range Rover ever.

It will also the cheapest model in the range, with prices estimated to start at about £35,000, at least £10,000 less than the cheapest Range Rover Sport – and about the same as a Land Rover Discovery.

Beckham, who has her own fashion label, unveiled the car at a celebrity-studded launch party last night, hosted by Vogue magazine but the vehicle will not make its official public debut until the Paris Motor Show at the end of September.

The company’s managing director, Phil Popham, says the model is aimed at an entirely new market segment for the marque: “It’s sporting looks and unique qualities will open the brand to a new group of customers who might not have considered a Range Rover before,” he says.

Despite no one outside the company knowing what the car looked like until now, or what it would cost, Land Rover says it has already taken deposits from buyers, and that it has received around 20,000 ’expressions of interest’ in the Evoque.
