Virgin strikes Spotify deal to launch music service

Virgin Media has partnered with Spotify to provide its customers with a digital music streaming service online, on their mobiles and through their TVs.

The new service, which will also be available on Virgin Media’s internet connected TiVo system, will give the company an extra asset to take on its main rivals Sky and BT.

The partnership means Virgin Media is the only entertainment provider to provide a digital music service, after BSkyB shut down Sky Songs less than a year after its launch. BT is also reported to have held talks with Spotify, although no similar partnership has been announced.

Virgin Media customers will be able to access Spotify Unlimited, which offers unlimited access to Spotify’s catalogue of more than 13 million tracks, and Spotify Premium, which allows mobile access.

Customers will be able to create playlists and share them – or individual tracks – with their friends through their Virgin-connected devices via Twitter and Facebook or through the Spotify platform.

The service is due to launch “in the coming months”.
