Virgin Atlantic is providing the England team with its own plane which will fly direct from London Heathrow to Johannesburg for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Ian Watmore, chief executive of The FA, says “I am delighted that we are able to launch England’s campaign in South Africa in such a high quality manner and we are very pleased to be in the capable hands of Sir Richard and Virgin Atlantic. It is a winning combination and I hope that bodes well for the tournament.”

The news comes as rival British Airways is locked in a battle with the Unite union that represents cabin crew. BA’s crews have voted to go on strike later this month, although the airline says that it will keep 60% of its customers flying during the action.
