Martin Wise

Managing director, direct bank

Royal Bank of Scotland

Martin Wise joined RBS in 2010 after five years as marketing director of St George Bank in Australia. In 2012 RBS underwent a group marketing restructure and Wise moved from a senior product role to marketing director. Trained from the start as a marketer, he has worked across banking and telecoms brands and until recently was responsible for the marketing strategies of NatWest and RBS. As part of his mission to get consumers to see banking brands as friendly and collaborative, he was behind campaigns such as ‘NatYes’ and the emergency cash initiative, which allows customers to use their mobiles to access ATMs. Wise is now managing director of NatWest and RBS’s direct bank services.

Best advice: "To apply for a one-year internal marketing secondment opportunity from London to Sydney. I got the role and stayed in Australia for 10 years."
