Sally Osman

Director, royal communications

The Royal Household

Sally Osman, a former journalist and director of communications at the BBC, began her tenure with the royal family as head of communications for the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. Her remit was extended to include the Queen when the PR offices for Buckingham Palace and Clarence House were merged in 2014. Managing this politically tricky transition was not virgin territory for the former Sony director of corporate communications, who was in charge of a culture change exercise in the electronics division in 2011.

Best advice: "When training as a journalist, I was advised that the norm would be that everyone would rush to interview the winner, but the runner up often had a more powerful story to tell."
