Making &£500 in one minute would no doubt appeal to most people – except, perhaps, those in the centre of the City of London, who would see it as a pay cut. So the Diary was surprised to see that Smirnoff Black Ice has chosen the City for the location of its latest publicity stunt.

Smirnoff has commissioned a 2.5m ice cube, which will sit in Broadgate Arena. From 10am today (Wednesday), the ice cube will be left to melt, revealing bottles of Black Ice, each of which contains &£500. At the centre of the cube is a rip-cord – and the lucky punter who pulls that will get &£50,000. Not bad for a minute’s work.

The cube will stay there until it has melted, and while organisers are expecting this to take about 48 hours, the Diary has seen the weather lately, and will be heading for the City in September to win the &£50k.
