Williams F1 to face protestat Grand Prix

The Williams Formula One team is bracing itself for a major guerrilla protest by Rover supporters at this month’s British Grand Prix over its close relationship with BMW.

The British F1 business, headed by Sir Frank Williams, signed up the German motor giant as its title sponsor last summer, in a five-year deal worth up to &£20m a year.

But BMW’s plans to sell Rover, and the threat of huge job losses, have sparked uproar. The Transport & General Workers’ Union says it has been approached by at least one group which aims to take action at Silverstone, near Northampton.

The union organised a protest march through Birmingham last weekend, but claims it is not planning any official protest at the British Grand Prix on Easter Sunday.

Northants police has been alerted about a possible protest.

BMW Williams F1 media manager Nav Sidhu says: “We are monitoring the situation very closely.”
