Woolworths launches catalogue service

Woolworths is to take on Argos and Tesco in the catalogue shopping market with the launch of its own service next month.

The Woolworths Big Red Book will feature more than 6,000 products from toys, home electrical and outdoor to confectionery, entertainment and Christmas decorations. It also includes a range of jewellery and watches to rival Argos’ Elizabeth Duke brand.

The catalogue will be advertised on television and 6 million copies will be distributed through Woolworths’ 800-plus high street stores.

The announcement follows last month’s launch of Tesco Direct, a catalogue and internet home shopping service.

Woolworths marketing director Stephen Robertson says it is the retail chain’s "most ambitious marketing project". He adds that catalogues are growing in popularity despite the rise of internet shopping.

Customers can order from the books online, over the telephone or in-store and can either select free delivery to a Woolworths store or home delivery at £4.95 per order.

In July, the company introduced its "You Collect or We Deliver" service. It is also rolling out kiosks to 100 stores where customers will be able to browse the full range of products and order and pay for products.
