Royal Mail has started a review of its £40m media planning and buying account, as first predicted by Marketing Week (MW July 20).

The review will be overseen by the company’s marketing director Alex Batchelor, who joined from Orange last year (MW April 21). Royal Mail is also looking for an agency to handle communications planning as part of the process.

Carat currently handles media planning and buying for Royal Mail and the Post Office, and the agency is expected to repitch. It originally won the business in 1997 and held onto it in 2002 after a statutory review.

The Post Office completed a review of its advertising arrangements earlier this year. It reappointed Publicis and Joshua and added Triangle, which has since been merged with Arc, to its roster (MW February 16).

Royal Mail recently began a review of its digital agency requirements. However, it is thought that its £20m advertising account, which is held by Abbott Mead Vickers.BBDO, is unaffected at this stage.
