The supermarket says it is looking to appoint a new board-level marketing director.

Burr will add responsibility for human resources to her existing customer service, corporate communications and Paralympic Games sponsorship remits.

Sainsbury’s did not offer further details about why the change has been made, but it follows the announcement that former trading director Mike Coupe is being promoted to the new role of group commercial director. He will take on overall responsibility for marketing, trading, IT and online.

Chief financial officer Darren Shapland has also been made group development director to handle the growth of the convenience channel and Sainsbury’s Bank

Justin King, Sainsbury’s CEO, says the management shake-up is part of the chain’s plans to “accelerate space expansion, grow its non-food business and develop new channels”.

In addition to Burr’s new role, the supermarket has also moved Jat Sahota from the role of head of non-food marketing to lead sponsorship.

Sahota is replaced by current head of instore marketing Rebecca Singleton.

Sainsbury’s reported a 7.6% sales increase in the 12 weeks to 12 June.
