Microsoft Xbox has partnered with American Express to reward gamers with real life gifts and offers for their in-game achievements.

The credit card company hopes the tie up will help drive up acquisitions amongst the typical young “savvy” male Xbox demographic, whilst Microsoft is expecting the initiative will help boost engagement and add “a new layer of value” to its online gaming service.

From 1 November UK and US American Express customers can sync their cards with the Xbox Live online gaming server for the chance to unlock achievements by playing first-person shooter game Halo 4.

Rewards include special offers at Curry’s PC World, credits worth £25 and the chance to win a trip to computer game event E3.

Separately, American Express cardholders who sync with the Xbox 360 dashboard will also be able to load voucher-free offers directly on to their cards to redeem at retailers such as Carphone Warehouse, Cineworld, Dixons Travel and Topman.

Leslie Berland, senior vice president of digital partnerships and development at American Express, says the partnership with Xbox will help bring a “new level of value and engagement” for its card members.

He adds: “In driving innovation, we start with the most relevant platforms for our cardmembers and work to develop powerful user experiences that can be created by our technology and closed-loop business model in a way that’s unique and unparalleled.”

The move follows American Express’ recently forged partnership with Foursquare that allows users to check in at participating locations and load discounts and special offers straight to their cards.
