Virgin Atlantic is to sponsor the Brawn GB team at this weekend’s Formula One Grand Prix in Japan.

The team’s drivers, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, will return for the 21st Grand Prix to be held at the Suzuka track, after an absence of three years.

Virgin Atlantic chief executive Steve Ridgway says: “Virgin Atlantic is supporting a brilliant team. They have shown red hot determination all season and led the way in their industry, so it’s a natural fit for us to be sponsoring Brawn.”

This year the F1 has been bogged down by scandal and the rift caused by a proposed £40m budget cap.

Brawn was one of the teams involved when the F1 was plunged into crisis earlier this year when eight of the 10 F1 teams threatened to form their own breakaway championship if a budget-cap was imposed on teams. A schism was avoided after the cap was scrapped.

Last week ING, the title sponsor of Renault F1 announced last week that it would sever all ties with the team in the wake of the race-fixing scandal.
