Asda hunts for new head of marketing

Asda is searching for a new marketing director to take over from chief executive Archie Norman, who installed himself in the top marketing position after the previous marketing director Michael Fleming quit (MW August 21).

When Norman assumed control, Asda denied it would seek another marketing director. But it has confirmed to sources that it is expecting to fill the position.

Speculation is mounting that Norman will quit to move into politics. He is believed to be seeking nomination as a Conservative candidate for the Vale of York seat.

Asda has a poor record with senior marketing staff. It is believed Fleming left because he wanted more strategic control. One suggested candidate is Mike Coupe, the director of Dales, Asda’s discount hypermarket chain. Another is Gwyn Wilson, head of Asda’s own-label brand.
