DPR drops Tesco data investigation

The Data Protection Registrar has dropped its investigation into Tesco’s use of “host mailings” to members of its Clubcard loyalty scheme.

The DPR also says it is satisfied Tesco is not passing on data about Clubcard members to Tesco Personal Finance, its joint financial venture with the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Three weeks ago a national newspaper revealed that the DPR had asked Tesco to clarify how it was using Clubcard members’ data after complaints from customers.

A DPR spokeswoman says: “At a meeting last week we ironed out the difficulties and both sides are happy. Tesco is not going to disclose data directly to third parties. It will host-mail details of third party offers, but these will be branded as Tesco.”

The supermarket group told the regulator it would only send data about third-party products if these involved special deals available only to Clubcard members. It would not sell the information to third parties.
