Dell appoints chief marketing officer

Dell has promoted Erin Nelson (pictured), vice-president of marketing for Europe, Middle East and Africa, to chief marketing officer. She replaces Mark Jarvis, who is stepping down from the role but will be a consultant to the company.

The changes are part of a restructure of the company into four global business units: Large Enterprise, Public, Small and Medium Business and Consumer customers.

Nelson’s role as CMO covers Dell’s commercial and consumer business. Her responsibilities will include CRM, communications, research, online and general agency management. She will join the Dell Executive Leadership Team reporting directly to Michael Dell, founder and ceo.

Nelson’s promotion comes after the resignation of Casey Jones, Dell vice-president of global marketing in November (MW November 12, 2008), who stepped down from the role after two years to become a marketing advisor to the company. Jones continues to work with Dell developing marketing ideas and working alongside Enfatico, the WPP created agency set up to service Dell as part of the company’s review of its $4.5bn (£2.9bn) global advertising business which WPP won in November 2007.

Enfatico, led by former Digitas Boston president Torrence Boone, handles advertising, media planning, buying and direct marketing for Dell.
