Howell Henry Chaldecott Lury has snatched the ú10m National Savings account from McCann-Erickson.

National Savings confirmed this week that HHCL had beaten competition from a shortlist that included the incumbent, DFSD Bozell and Publicis.

The account will be held jointly with HHCL’s new media strategy partner Michaelides & Bednash.

HHCL’s appointment ends a six-month pitch carried out across Europe, during which agencies were prevented from showing creative work and asked instead to submit a five-year marketing strategy for National Savings.

HHCL takes over the account on April 1. It will hold it for at least three years, and National Savings may then extend the contract to 2000.

The news is a considerable blow for McCann-Erickson, which has held the account since January 1990.

National Savings says it is considering continuing with the Gary Larson cartoon-based ads, which McCann created.

“Larson has been quite successful and achieved its aims of gaining a slightly wider audience. It is too early to say but we are not prevented from continuing with Larson under HHCL,” says a National Savings spokesman.
