Launch of UK cyber bars heralds new Internet era

Travellers on the information superhighway will soon be surfing under the influence of alcohol with the launch of Internet- linked bars and pubs.

The UK’s first cyber pub, the “Six Bells”, opens next week in Cambridge and is a joint venture between Greene King and Internet provider CityScape. Plans for further Internet pubs are being discussed.

Meanwhile, London’s Cyberia Cafe this week opens a further outlet in Kingston. The Kingston branch will sell alcohol. The original Cyberia Cafe is unlicensed.

Easynet, which provides the Internet services for Cafe Cyberia, says that more launches will follow shortly. Marketing director Eamonn O’Shea says Internet-linked bars are due to open across the UK and in Paris, Frankfurt and Berlin. “This is a unique idea. Our London cafe draws 200 visitors a day,” he says.
