Time marketing director makes sudden departure

Time Computers’ marketing director Mike Phillipson has made an abrupt exit from the group, after less than six months in the job.

The Lancashire-based computer manufacturer confirms that Phillipson left on the same day that he tendered his resignation. The company says that he has left to write a novel and screenplay, with no suggestion of ill-feeling.

A Time spokeswoman says: “He has left to pursue his dream ambition and it was a completely amicable departure. He has kicked our marketing department into shape and leaves a strong legacy.”

Phillipson adds: “I want to spend some proper time on my writing. Time is a great company to work for and I am sure it will thrive.”

Phillipson joined Time from First Direct in August last year, where he was head of brand communications. Previously, he worked as an account handler at J Walter Thompson, Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper and Lowe Howard-Spink. He has already written one novel – an action thriller called Paradise Account.

His position remains vacant and marketing will be overseen by Time chairman, Dr Tarik Mohammed, until a replacement is found.

Phillipson recently changed Time’s advertising arrangements, handing its £30m creative account to HHCL & Partners from Manchester-based incumbent BDH TBWA. Media is through CIA Manchester.

HHCL’s first campaign for Time saw a move away from ads featuring Leonard Nimoy. Instead, HHCL created a hapless anti-hero called Dr Apocalypse.

Phillipson was also rolling out Time Xtra, which combines online, mail order and retail distribution channels selling branded computer products.
