Masterfoods has shifted the &£60m global advertising account for Skittles and the medicated confectionery brands Lockets and Tunes out of the BBDO network and into TBWA Worldwide. In the UK, the account moves from Minerva, formerly known as AMV Advance.

The decision to realign the accounts was made by Masterfoods in the US. TBWA will take responsibility for the accounts later this year. It is understood that TBWA will also handle a top-secret sugar confectionery launch from Masterfoods, which is expected later in the year.

Industry insiders say that the confectionery giant is focusing on functional sugar confectionery, such as the adult fruit sweet AquaDrop, which is being launched later this year with advertising support of &£2m. The sugar-free sweet will be marketed as a hydrating sweet.

In July 2002, TBWA resigned from the pan-European Cadbury account so that it could take on a number of Masterfoods petcare brands, including Whiskas and Chappie. Minerva took on the Skittles account at the same time.

The move does not affect the Starburst account, which is handled by Grey Worldwide, or the chocolate business, which is split between Grey and Abbott Mead Vickers.BDDO. Minerva still handles the Uncle Ben’s brand and Dolmio pasta sauce.
