Sunday Business has scrapped sports coverage as part of its March 11 relaunch.

It is understood chief sports writer Graham Otway has been made redundant and sports contributors have been told they are no longer needed.

Adam Parsons, the sports editor, moves to features. It is understood he will write in-depth sports business stories for the new magazine called Business & Pleasure, and cover other subjects including motoring and travel.

Sources at the newspaper say they are baffled by the decision to axe coverage, which varied between three to five pages.

A source says: “The sports team has consistently made mincemeat of the opposition and broke a number of high-profile stories.

“They are saddened and surprised. The decision is peculiar because sport was something readers wanted.”

The sports pages, which were in the second section of the newspaper, will now be filled with editorial from The Sunday Investor section.
