Vodafone continues consumer division restructure

Vodafone has appointed former American Express marketer Phil Marsland as head of customer marketing and has promoted Charlie Smith to head of brand and communications in its ongoing restructure. Marsland’s role will take effect from September 15.

Marsland was previously head of new product development at Amex’s consumer products division. Smith has been acting as head of brand and communications for the last four months.

Smith has worked on a number of campaigns at the mobile operator as well as projects such as its mobile internet and broadband advertising. Marsland and Smith will both report to Vodafone’s consumer director, Ian Shepherd.

Smith replaces Dominic Chambers, who left the company in February (MW.co.uk February 25). It is understood the restructure will lead to at least 400 redundancies, as Vodafone UK looks to simplify its structure and become more customer focused.

Vodafone is reviewing its £55m UK media buying account, which is currently held by OMD. It is understood that the agency will retain the planning and will repitch for the buying business.
