The Climate Challenge Fund is launching a flagship educational project for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in a bid to tackle climate change and carbon emissions.
The Climate Dome has been developed as part of Defra’s Tomorrow’s Climate, Today’s Challenge programme. The initiative, which includes film, interactive displays and a website, will travel across the North-east over the next year.
The Dome has been developed by design agency Sumo as part of a below-the-line campaign to educate the public about environmental issues. The project follows research carried out by marketing strategy and research company Sale Owen, which found that people were aware of climate change but did not understand the importance of the issue.
Helen Owen of Sale Owen said: “Every area of the UK has Climate Change Fund projects. This project is aimed at different groups aged 17 to 70 and targets the people least aware of climate change.”
The dome will tour shopping centres, schools, festivals and sporting events explaining the science and practical consequences of climate change.
Owen said the programme was an addition to the £5m account that Defra recently awarded to Abbott Mead Vickers.BBDO to develop a campaign highlighting ways consumers can reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.
Scottish Power is one of the partners supporting the dome project, along with the Environment Agency and Energy Saving Trust.
