Alcatel-Lucent hands Stephen Carter chief marketing role

Communications company Alcatel-Lucent has recruited former Ofcom chief and architect of the Digital Britain report Stephen Carter to take the newly created position of chief marketing, strategy and communication officer.

Lord Carter of Barnes is the latest addition to a management team that includes former BT chief executive Ben Verwaayen as CEO.

Lord Carter most recently served as a minister in the Government for the Communications, Technology and Broadcasting sector, where he wrote the Digital Britain report. He left government last June.

He was the first chief executive of regulatory body Ofcom and is a former managing director of NTL UK & Ireland and chief executive of advertising agency JWT.

Verwaayen says/ “A vital next step for our company is to transform our marketing and bring the Alcatel-Lucent strategy to life for our customers and for the market.”

Lord Carter says: “Alcatel-Lucent is a company on the move, in a sector experiencing rapid change with leadership committed to meeting that change head on.

French company Alcatel-Lucent operates in more than 130 countries and Carter will be based in Paris.

The company describes itself as “A leader in fixed, mobile and converged broadband networking, IP technologies, applications and services, leveraging the unrivalled technical and scientific expertise of Bell Labs, one of the largest innovation powerhouses in the communications industry.”
