The company said more than 1m apps and 250,000 e-books for the iPad had been sold since 3 April.
Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, said, “IPad users on average downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad.”
Although the iPad doesn’t launch in the UK until the end of the month, UK publisher Guardian News & Media has teamed with photography firm Canon to publish the Guardian Eyewitness photography app for the iPad.
The app features content from the Eyewitness section of its print issue. It’s available free of charge although no download figures have been made publicly available.
Emily Bell, director of digital content at Guardian News & Media, said, “Our Eyewitness images work so well because the photography is given such prominence in the centre spread of the newspaper. Now the iPad will enable users to see these striking images full-screen in an electronic format.”
Publishers such as Condé Nast have announced plans to launch apps specifically tailored for the iPad (nma.co.uk 1 March 2010).
