Top Barclays marketer resigns after banking operations merge

Barclays personal banking marketing director Andrew Gillespie has resigned after a merger of Barclays UK banking operations that will see 800 head office jobs go.

Barclays says it will appoint a top marketer for its newly merged UK banking operations. It is separately searching for a replacement for global marketing and communications director Simon Gulliford, who resigned last month.

Barclays UK operations was split into three divisions – personal banking, business banking and private clients – each with its own marketing director. The decision to create a single UK banking division means the bank is making redundancies as it eliminates duplication.

Gillespie will leave at the end of this month after his job has been merged with that of commercial director Paul Morrish, who now becomes marketing director, personal customers, with an enlarged remit. It is not known whether Gillespie has a job to go to.

George Bothwell is marketing director of Barclays Private Clients on an interim basis until he also leaves the company (MW July 17, 2003). Business marketing director Bruce Kelsall remains in his job.

The bank anticipates that about 15 marketing jobs will go. As a result of these cost savings, Barclays says it will create 1,000 jobs at its high street branches.
