Government turns to Facebook to help cut spending

The Government has unveiled a partnership with Facebook to invite members to submit ideas on how to cut spending. Watch a web conference between Prime Minster David Cameron and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg here.

Facebook will be the Government’s “primary channel” for communicating with the public about cuts.

The Government is said to be keen to use the social networking site and new technology to crowd source ideas and involve the public in policy making.

The social networking site says its 23 million UK users have been asked to submit and vote on ideas where David Cameron’s coalition government can make cuts.

The partnership is part of Facebook’s Democracy UK pages and links to a government website “The Spending Challenge” where members of the public are invited to  “help shape the way government works.”

More than 50,000 ideas have already been submitted via The Spending Challenge and the government says that the most serious submissions will be taken forward by government departments.
