L’Oreal creates first CMO role

L’Oreal has appointed its first chief marketing officer as part of an overhaul of its strategic marketing operations.

Marc Menesguen, managing director of L’Oreal’s luxury products division, has been promoted to CMO and will lead the cosmetic firm’s newly created strategic mareting department from 1 Jan.

He will report to CEO Jean-Paul Agon.

Menesguen has been at L’Oreal since 1985 and will continue to serve on L’Oreal’s executive committee.

Menesguen has been responsible for the launch of a number of fragrance brands and the successful integration of Yves-Saint-Laurent into the L’Oreal business.

The cosmetic firm says the new department has been created to enhance its approach to “consumer understanding, marketing creativity, advertising creation and digital communication”.

As part of the shake up, L’Oreal has named Nicolas Hieronimus as managing director of the Luxury Products Division, and An Verhulst-Santos as managing director of the Professional Products Division.

L’Oreal’s rival Revlon recreated its CMO role earlier this month and appointed former Coca-Cola GB marketer Julia Goldin after axing the position to save costs in 2006.

Earlier this month, L’Oreal appointed former Coca-Cola and News International marketer Jeremy Schwartz to manage its Garnier and Maybelline brands in the UK.
