The Sun has confirmed it is to introduce a paywall model across all of its digital platforms later this year to coincide with the launch of its Premier League highlights.

The News International title, which has more than 30 million monthly readers, says the move will offer online users “a bigger and better experience than they have ever had before”.

It has not yet released further details about the amount it plans to charge readers to access its digital services or the types of subscription packages.

When News International’s The Times put up its paywall in 2010 unofficial figures found its online readership to fall almost 90 per cent just three weeks after launch.

News International will be hoping its deal to showcase Premier League clips online will attract new readers to the Sun as well as convince its current readership to pay for its content. News International acquired the highlights package in January last year, replacing similar web and mobile agreements with Yahoo! and ESPN.

The news about The Sun’s paywall comes just a day after The Daily Telegraph announced it was to introduce a “metered paywall” model across its desktop site and mobile apps.
